Stockport’s new state-of-the art interchange is also going to be a work of art, after a local artist was commissioned to create a bespoke feature for the site. Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) working with Stockport Council have appointed local artist, Tim Ward, to work closely with people in Stockport to create a piece of artwork at a new, state-of-the-art transport interchange.

Tim, founder of Circling the Square, was chosen to take on this project based on his vast experience of working in partnership with local communities on public art projects. Initially, Tim will hold a consultation sessions with local people to explore ways in which the town’s heritage might be reflected within the public art. This will help to inform the future design for the art at Stockport Interchange. Commenting on his appointment, Tim said: “It’s great to have been chosen to create and install the public art at Stockport Interchange. A key element to my art is the ability to engage with local communities. I’m looking forward to holding consultation sessions to capture the stories, knowledge and imagination of people in Stockport.” Part of the funding for the artwork has been secured through Heritage Lottery, which aims to preserve the nation’s heritage and make it more accessible to people. Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration, Councillor Kate Butler, said: “We’re delighted to be we are working with Tim Ward on this project. Public art plays an important role in injecting vibrancy into areas and bringing them to life. We want this piece to reflect our town’s important heritage, so I’d encourage local residents to come along and give us their thoughts and ideas at the public consultation events.” Councillor Fender, Chair of the TfGM Committee, commented: “This is a very exciting time for Stockport. Quality public art, which the community has been involved with, is just one aspect of the improvements we expect to achieve over the coming years in the area.” Click TfGM to keep updated about the overall Stockport Transport Interchange Scheme
